Exciting news for all Gintama fans! The official website of the Gintama anime series has unveiled its latest treat for enthusiasts – “Gintama on Theater 2D: Baragaki-hen,” a revamped version of the beloved Baragaki-hen (Thorny Arc) from the second season. This thrilling anime, featuring fresh content, is set to grace screens across Japan for a three-week extravaganza starting on November 10. Let’s delve into the details and discover what makes this cinematic event a must-watch for fans of the series.

The Thorny Arc Resurfaces

The Baragaki-hen (Thorny Arc) originally spanned chapters 365–370 in the manga and episodes 43–46 in the second season, making it episodes 244–247 overall. This re-edit is part of the franchise’s 20th-anniversary project, stretching from 2023, the manga’s 20th anniversary of serialization, to 2026, celebrating two decades since the anime’s debut. To give fans a glimpse of what’s in store, the official website has also unveiled a captivating key visual.

A Gintama Journey

Hideaki Sorachi, the brilliant mind behind Gintama, introduced this captivating series in Weekly Shounen Jump back in December 2003. The manga ran for an impressive 15 years before concluding in September 2018. Following its run in Jump GIGA for three consecutive issues, it found its final resting place on the official Gintama application, culminating in June 2019 with the publication of the 77th and final volume in August of the same year.

Gintama’s journey on the small screen began with a special episode for the Jump Festa Anime Tour in September 2005. The first anime season debuted in the Spring 2006, treating fans to 201 episodes until the Winter 2010. This remarkable saga was followed by six additional seasons spanning from 2011 to 2018.

The manga’s captivating storyline also inspired two anime movies, released in 2010 and 2013, along with numerous original video anime episodes that further enriched the Gintama universe.

A Global Phenomenon

Gintama’s international appeal became evident when Sentai Filmworks released the first 49 episodes and the first anime movie from 2010 to 2012 on DVD and Blu-ray, respectively. Crunchyroll later re-licensed the anime series, streaming episodes 266–291 through Funimation in March 2018. The second part of the release, featuring episodes 292–316, made its way to fans’ collections in September 2018.

The series also found a dedicated English-speaking audience as VIZ Media began publishing it through its Shounen Jump Advanced imprint in 2007, continuing until the release of the 23rd volume in 2011. Gintama’s witty humor and engaging storytelling have transcended language barriers, captivating audiences across the globe.

A Thriving Legacy

Gintama’s enduring legacy is a testament to its universal appeal. Not only was the manga localized in multiple foreign languages, but it also left an indelible mark on the world of anime and manga. Its compelling characters, hilarious antics, and thought-provoking themes continue to resonate with fans old and new.

As we eagerly anticipate the re-edited version of the beloved Thorny Arc in “Gintama on Theater 2D: Baragaki-hen,” we can’t help but reflect on the remarkable journey this franchise has taken over the past two decades. From its manga inception in 2003 to the latest cinematic offering, Gintama has remained a source of entertainment, laughter, and inspiration for fans around the world. Whether you’re a long-time follower or a newcomer to the series, this cinematic event promises an exciting experience that celebrates the essence of Gintama.
