1 years ago By AI Smith

With more than 20 years of broadcast behind it, the One Piece anime has become one of the longest-running in all of history and also one of the most beloved by its fervent followers. Now, Eiichirô Oda’s work starring a group of diverse pirates embarks on a new adventure thanks to Netflix’s live-action adaptation, released this August 30 on our screens.

Far from what it might seem, the One Piece series is a more than worthy adaptation and no, it is not a disaster, as we told you in our review and as its enormous success worldwide is demonstrating. So, as we know there will probably be many new viewers who will want to jump into the story of this anime without having much idea of who its protagonists are, here we bring you a summary so that you can get to know the main characters of the anime and also, of course, who are the actors and actresses who face them in the Netflix television series.

Monkey D. Luffy (Inaki Godoy)

Luffy is the main and charismatic protagonist of One Piece, the leader of the Straw Hat gang and a candidate for the important title of King of the Pirates. Curiously, Luffy also has a very notable peculiarity, and that is that his body is elastic due to eating a devil fruit during his childhood. Something that naturally provides him with unique abilities for all types of occasions. Mind you, he can’t swim.

In the series, the young Iñaki Godoy is in charge of playing Luffy. Godoy is an actor of Mexican origin born in 2003 who has previously participated in other series such as ‘The Imperfects’, ‘Who Killed Sara?’ or ‘Blue Demon’. In the cinema, we have been able to see it in films like ‘MexZombies’ or ‘Don’t open the door’. His career is not yet very extensive, but he promises to be the star of One Piece and, in addition, he has earned the affection of Oda himself, since the creator of the manga assured that when he saw Godoy he knew that he was the perfect Luffy that they were looking for.

Nami (Emily Rudd)

Nami is the main female character in Luffy’s crew. She is a thief with the dream of travelling through all the seas of the world and mapping lands that are still unknown, but, in addition, she also has a personal mission. She desperately wants to find the map of the Great Sea Route, the stream in which she supposedly finds One Piece’s hideout.

Emily Rudd is the actress who plays Nami in the live-action series. Rudd, a declared fan of anime, is an American actress best known for having played Cindy Berman in the horror film trilogy for Netflix ‘Terror Street’. In addition to this, we have also seen her on the small screen in the Amazon series ‘The Romanoffs’ or the SyFy series ‘Hunters’.

Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu Maeda)

One of the most iconic One Piece characters is undoubtedly Roronoa Zoro, a green-haired swordsman who hunts pirates with his three sharp swords (one in each hand and one in his mouth). He is a grumpy ally in Luffy’s gang and a guy with a lot of combat skills.

In the live-action series, the Japanese actor Mackenyu Maeda is the one who steps into the shoes of Zoro. The young Mackenyu assured Netflix that he grew up idolizing this character, so his dedication to the role is maximum. His name is quite well known in drama movies like ‘Over Drive’, ‘Samurai X: The End’ and the most recent version of ‘The Knights of the Zodiac’. On television, he has also been acting for practically a decade in various productions.

Sanji (Taz Skylar)

Sanji is the cook of Luffy’s gang crew. Cunning and sagacious, he is always ready to sneak out of trouble and show his innate charm. Furthermore, when he has to fight, he does not hesitate to use his legs for it. Taz Skylar, a Spanish-born actor of British and Arab descent, is honoured to play Sanji in one of his first high-profile productions. Until now, he has acted in various short films and has also had small roles in productions of all kinds, such as ‘The Lazarus Project’, ‘The Deal’, ‘Hierve’ or ‘Villain’.

Usopp (Jacob Romero Gibson)

Usopp is a skilled slingshot marksman who also joins Luffy’s gang. The renegade son of a famous pirate, Usopp always wants to show his worth, even though he is unable to control his fearful attitude towards him and always has time to tell a made-up story or two. Undoubtedly, he is one of the most beloved characters for his goodness and his comic encore.

Jacob Romero Gibson, better known as Jacob Gibson, is the Jamaican-born American actor who plays Usopp in the Netflix series. His career is not yet very extensive, but among some of his works we can mention the role of AJ Delajae for the series ‘Greenleaf’ or his brief stints in ‘All Rise’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.

Alvida (Ilia Isorelýs Paulino)

Alvida, also known as the Iron Mace, is the former captain of the Alvida Pirates. Her role in the anime is very prominent, as she is the first enemy that Luffy must face. Of great egocentrism, she considers herself the most beautiful woman in the entire sea, Alvida wants all men to think the same. In the Netflix series, the Dominican actress Ilia Isorelýs Paulino is the one who gives life to Alvida. In her still short career, we have seen her, for example, in the role of Lila in the series ‘The sexual life of university students’.

Shanks (Peter Gadiot)

Shanks, or Shanks the Redhead, is one of the Four Emperors who rule the New World and the man who inspired Luffy to follow his dream of wanting to be King of the Pirates. Also, he is the one who found the Gomu Gomu fruit that Luffy ate by accident. This character, one of the most beloved anime (and according to Oda, the one who most resembles him in attitude), is played in the series by Peter Gadiot, a British and Mexican actor who has worked for theatre and has given life to Cyrus in the series ‘Once Upon a Time in Wonderland’ or James in the drama ‘Queen of the South’.

Buggy (Jeff Ward)

Buggy the Star Clown is one of the villains of the anime, one of the Four Emperors who rule the seas of the New World, and co-leader of the Alliance of Buggy and Alvida. He is considered the main antagonist of the Orange City arc and has a strong rivalry with Luffy.

In the series, it is Jeff Ward, an American actor, who plays this evil clown. Ward is known for the role of Deke Shaw in the Marvel series ‘Agents of SHIELD’, and has also gone on to play Charles Manson in the TV movie ‘Manson’s Lost Girls’. As a curiosity, Ward went to the same acting university as the popular actor Miles Teller.

Arlong (McKinley Belcher III)

Arlong is a sawshark fishman and captain of the Arlong Pirates, as well as a former member of the Sun Pirates. This character is an antagonist that has relevance during the Arlong Park arc in the anime, and in the series, he is played by McKinley Belcher III under an important and notable makeup job. McKinley is known for his role as Samuel Diggs in the series ‘Mercy Street’, but he has also appeared in the drama ‘Fox The Passage’ or the Netflix crime thriller ‘Ozark’.

Captain Morgan (Langley Kirkwood)

Captain Morgan, also called Axehand for his incredibly menacing axe on his right arm, is a proud and cruel Navy captain who also wears a metal jaw from breaking his own in the past. Langley Kirkwood is the veteran British actor who plays Morgan in the series. He has a long career, including appearances in the films ‘Invictus’, ‘Dredd’ and ‘Mia and the White Lion’.

Helmeppo (Aidan Scott)

Helmeppo is the son of Morgan and a brat who does not master the art of martial combat like his father. Aidan Scott-Nickel, a British film and television actor, is chosen to play Helmeppo in the Netflix series, and this is also one of his first major roles. So far, moreover, he has also acted in some plays in South Africa.

Koby (Morgan Davies)

Koby is a boy with pink hair and glasses who dreams of joining the Marines. A member of the Alvida Pirates, he is a companion of Helmeppo and in the series he is played by the young Morgan Davies, an Australian actor who began acting as a child in childhood, such as being Madeleine in ‘Storm Boy’ alongside Geoffrey Rush. Davies also starred in the 2020 series ‘The End’, in which he played a trans teen in the process of gender transition.

Monkey D. Garp (Vincent Regan)

Monkey D. Garp, better known by his epithets Garp the Fist or the Navy Hero, is the respected vice admiral of Navy Headquarters as an instructor for recruits. Additionally, he is the father of Dragon the Revolutionary, Luffy’s paternal grandfather. Vincent Rega, a Welsh actor with tough film roles such as Artemis in the film ‘300’, Eudorus in ‘Troy’ and Kepheus in ‘Clash of the Titans’, is the one who plays the strong Garp in the Netflix series.
